If Holyfield wasn't allowed to headbutt and clinch....

....would he have beaten Tyson? I have nothing but respect for his skill, but it was the constant clinching and head butts that kept Mike frustrated and threw him off his game. What do you think? Would Mike have beat him if the referee had been more strict?

Nope. Holyfield likely could not win otherwise. Pushing and mauling Mike back constantly kept him off balance and minimized his power a bit because Tyson has the most force when he moves forward. The headbutting made Tyson black out in the first fight and he didn't remember much after the 6th round.

Without the mauling and butting, how would Holyfield beat Mike? He can't trade with him, and he isn't big enough to fight from the distance with a jab the way that Lewis did.

Holyfield is very capable and may still pull it off but he'd have to develop a new strategy.

Evolution
The clinching and butting wasn't all Evander though. Evander didn't just fight a defensive fight against Mike, he fought aggressive too. Both of them came forward to attack and clashed heads as a result.

Mike also has a habit of wrapping his arms around you when he misses a punch. This is why he was frequently clinched by a LOT of fighters, not just Evander.
